Man City keen to keep hold of senior star who wants a new challenge at his ‘dream’ club

Regardless of whether Man City win another Premier League title or not, it seems that one of their senior players has already made his mind up on a move elsewhere.

According to Football Insider, City’s Ilkay Gundogan sees his future at Barcelona, with the move apparently a ‘dream’ for the 32-year-old.

The Catalan club are still being hamstrung in their efforts to get the club back on an even keel financially it seems, but the German international would be within their grasp given his contract with the Citizens expires at the end of the current campaign.

Whilst one can understand the move from the player’s point of view, it’s a bit of a head scratcher from Barca, given that they’re already well stocked with midfielders.

Sergio Busquets, Gavi, Pedri, Sergi Roberto and Frenkie de Jong will take some shifting if, as should be expected, all will still be lining up for the Camp Nou outfit next summer.

Perhaps his elite level experience and a captain’s attitude in the dressing room is something that Xavi believes he can work with, and which would benefit others in the side.

He did play alongside Robert Lewandowski at Dortmund too, so may be able to provide the link to the front man to see him back to his best again.

ESPN note that Gundogan’s agent is a regular visitor to Barcelona’s training ground as he also represents Andreas Christensen.

Both parties would, apparently, be open to a deal in the right circumstances. That is of course dependent on just how hard the Spanish league authorities come down on Barca in relation to Financial Fair Play.
